Samburu National Reserve is in the wilds of Northern Kenya, on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. The rusty orange shade associated with Samburu is deeply intertwined with the regions unique landscape with the Koitogor and Ololokwe mountains reflecting a vibrant hue. Samburu is characterised by its semi-arid terrain where the earth often takes on a warm orange tint, reflected by its soil rich in iron oxide, creating amazing mirages during the heat of the day. Home to abundance wildlife species unique to Northern Kenya, this rugged environment is the epitome of adventure. The mighty Ewaso Ng'iro River flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests, sustaining all the surrounding wildlife. You may see leopard, lion and cheetah and Grevy zebra. The Somali ostrich with their blue necks and reticulated giraffe are exclusive to the area. In addition a Black rhino population has been re-introduced into the park after an absence of 25 years.
The Northern Frontier also includes the Laikipia Plateau consisting of National Parks, Forest Reserves, Wildlife Conservancies, Sanctuaries and Ranches. The area is particularly associated with extensive, scientific efforts in restoring endangered species. Laikipia is a science led technological hub in the advancement of regenerating species such as the Northern White Rhino. Some of these reserves are exclusive, offering activities that are banned in National Parks, such as night game drives, walking, horse and camel riding safaris. Watching wildlife tends to be more intimate here. Samburu is the epitome of adventure, landscapes and its variety of flora and fauna.
