The Rwenzori Mountains

Rwenzori's Mountains view from thick & rocky valley approach

The Rwenzori's Intro

Also known as 'The Mountains of the Moon'

The Rwenzori Mountains often referred to as the 'Mountains of the Moon,' are a stunning mountain range located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty and diverse ecosystems, this mountain range rises to over 5,100 meters above sea level (16,763ft) and is home to some of Africa's highest peaks, including Margarita, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.

The Rwenzoris are renowned for their unique flora and fauna, featuring thick montane forest leading into dense jungle with floating walkways above swamps. Exiting that, the terrain opens up into alpine moorland and lakes flanked by peaks. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its rich biodiversity, endemic species such as the Rwenzori chimpanzee and numerous plants including giant groundsel and lobelia.

Trekking the jungles of the Rwenzori Mountains offers the adventurer a completely different experience to that of other mountains in East Africa. It is one of Africa's less explored natural treasures.
